The Enneagram Symbol

WHAT IS IT?

The Enneagram symbol is a nine-pointed geometric shape. It’s a circle with nine points.

Each of the numbers represents a personality Type. Type 9 is always at the top of the circle.

The numbers are intentionally connected with arrows to map out specific growth paths and highlight how we are all connected.

Our Enneagram Type is the lens through which we see and experience the world.

We are only one Type and no Type is better, worse, or more capable than any other Type.

Enneagram Arrows

Each Core Type in the Enneagram is also connected by two lines to two other Enneagram Types. For example, Type 1 is connected to Type 7 and Type 4. These lines are called Arrows and are used for growth movements within your Type.

  • Movements on these lines will show up as either strengths or weaknesses within your Core Type depending on how you are accessing the Arrows at any given time.

  • You can go to these points in health or stress. You will pick up different traits of that Type depending on how you approach the number. You can go with intention when you want to add something new to strengthen your Type, or you can go there as a default when feeling stressed, picking up some of the negative behaviors.

  • The connected points are intentional and meant to help you find a way to integrate strengths that might not be as natural for your Core Type.

Enneagram Wings

The numbers (Types) on either side of each Core Type are called Wings. For example, Type 1 has Type 9 and Type 2 as Wings. You can think of them as your "neighbor numbers".

  • Like salt and pepper, the Wings will flavor your personality Type.

  • You have access to both and can use the characteristics of each of the Wings to shape your Core Type.

Understanding the influence of the Enneagram Wings can help add more nuance to understanding your Type. It helps you see how your Type can show up differently depending on how you're using your Wings.
